The Institute of Radiation Problems of the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan is planning to hold an international conference titled “Environmental Impact of Military Conflicts” on September 10–12, 2025, in Baku. This scientific event will present information collected from various countries on the destructive environmental impacts of military conflicts, exchange experience in environmental rehabilitation, and promote international cooperation in this field. This is the first conference to be held on this topic.
In the last 30 years, numerous military conflicts have taken place in the countries of the region, particularly in the post-Soviet states. As a result of these ongoing military operations, complications have arisen in the air, soil, and water of the region, disrupting the natural carbon cycle, which plays an important role in climate change. Chemical pollution from explosives, fuel leaks from destroyed machinery, radiation contamination, forest fires — especially the pollution of water resources — and degradation processes affecting fauna and flora have created serious environmental risks, threatening both human life and the natural environment. The program of the conference includes a thematic tour to the Karabakh region, where military operations took place. Additionally, one session will be held in the city of Khankendi.
Political discussions concerning the causes and responsibility for conflicts will not be permitted at the conference; only the environmental impact of conflicts will be addressed.
Sestions:
I. Military operations, used equipment, explosive and chemical means
II. Forest fires, pollution of water and land resources caused by military operations
III. Impact of military operations on the radioecological situation
IV. Influence of military operations and occupation processes on historical-architectural monuments
V. Impact of environmental degradation on climate change
VI. Establishing international cooperation in the field of reconstruction of war-torn territories
We look forward to hosting you in Baku in September 2025. — ICONF IRP-2025 Organizing Committee If you would like to receive emails regarding the conference, please subscribe by contacting us at: office@conferencerpi25.az
